How do I set up, change or cancel regular payments - standing orders and Direct Debits?
The simple answer for Direct Debits is, you can’t set them up. They’re set up by the company you’re paying once you’ve given them the OK. They can also amend a Direct Debit if you've given them permission to do it. It’s the same for all banks.
But you can set up a standing order and here’s how to do it if you’re an Online Banking member:
- Log in and go to the Set Up A Standing Order page. The link is in the dropdown menu on At a Glance
- Follow the instructions to list the account you want to pay, the amount and how often the payment should be made
- You can amend, cancel and see a list of your existing standing orders by clicking on the Change Payments link on At a Glance.
You can cancel standing orders and Direct Debits online but do give us at least one working day’s notice before the payment is due to come out of your account - and before 5.30pm. For example, if you want to cancel a payment that’s due on Monday, tell us before 5.30pm on Friday. If you need to cancel the payment after this time, contact your branch or Telephone Banking on 08457 555555* (if you’re registered).
If you’re cancelling a Direct Debit, let the company you’re paying know because they may keep trying to take money out of your account.
If you want to set up a new standing order by post, print and complete the regular payments form ** and return it to the address shown on the form.
