How do I set up, change or cancel standing orders and Direct Debits?

Direct Debits

You won’t be able to set up a Direct Debit – that’s done by the company you’re paying once you’ve given them the OK. They can also amend a Direct Debit, with your permission.

If you’re cancelling a Direct Debit, let the company you’re paying know because they may keep trying to take money out of your account.

To delete a Direct Debit in Online Banking, go to the ‘Account services’ link in the top blue menu bar of your homepage (1). Then select ‘Standing orders, direct debits, future payments & transfers’ under the ‘Manage payments & transfers’ section.

In the new window that appears, select the account you pay the Direct Debit from and ‘Direct Debits’ from the drop-down menu headed ‘What kind of information do you want to see?’.

On Step 2, select the Direct Debit from the list. Select the ‘Amend’ button.

Then, on Step 3, select the box to delete the payment.

More about standing orders and Direct Debits

If you cancel standing orders and Direct Debits online, do give us at least one working day’s notice before the payment is due to come out of your account – and before 5.30pm. For example, if you want to cancel a payment that’s due on Monday, tell us before 5.30pm on Friday.

You can amend standing orders in branch or with Telephone Banking on 0845 755 5555* (if you’re registered).
